The Emerging of BRICS and U.S. Hostility

 By David Starr

The Global South in particular has needed reforms and policies that don’t conform with and defy the current U.S.-dominated world order. It’s been a long time coming.

A viable alternative is BRICS, an acronym that stands for the names of the countries that founded it: Brazil, Russia, India, China, are the founding members, with South Africa joining in 2011.

As stated on its web site, the objectives of BRICS “incudes strengthening economic, political and social cooperation among its members, as well as increasing the influence of Global South countries in international governance. The group seeks to improve the legitimacy, equity in participation and efficiency in global institutions such as the UN, IMF, World Bank and WTO. (UN = United Nations, IMF = International Monetary Fund, and WTO = World Trade Organization.)

“Moreover, it aims to bolster sustainable social and economic development and promote social inclusion.”

The site also lists other countries involved in BRICS, besides Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, who are full members. Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates are also full members. Partner countries include Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan. Brazil (with the presidency under its leadership in 2025) announced that Vietnam has joined.

The Ancient Craft web site stated that 32 more countries wanted to join BRICS.

There was a BRICS summit on September 9, 2025 which further mapped out its objectives. This according to ANI News.

Then there are the naysayers. For example, The Economic Timesa right-wing source–which Media Bias/Fact Check concluded was “biased and questionable” based on “numerous failed fact checks”–published what amounted to a hit piece on BRICS. The Economic Times showed a video segment of Peter Navarro, Senior Counsellor for Trade and Manufacturing under the Trump regime, who claimed that BRICS nations “hated each other” and called them “vampires.”

It's probable that the BRICS countries don’t hate each other, despite having certain disagreements. And Navarro’s use of the word “vampires” is a cheap shot. Who have been vampires in regards to the status and conditions of the Global South? Quite obviously, it’s been the West; in particular the U.S. empire over the last 100 years.

Trump also had something to say about the increasing emergence of BRICS: “Any country aligning themselves with the anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% tariff.” Trump has been a madman with his threats and following through with numerous tariffs against BRICS countries. He added, “There will be no exceptions to this policy. Thank you for attention to this matter!”

Trump posted his remarks on “Truth Social,” although a more realistic name for this social media site would be, “Lies Social.”

Members of BRICS responded to Trump’s threats, with BRICS members determined to continue to establish a multi-polar world. According to People’s Dispatch, Chinese President Xi Jinping said that in the face of increasing hostility from the U.S. empire, BRICS should continue with its goals of “the spirit of openness, inclusiveness and win-win cooperation…[to] defend multilateralism and the multilateral trading system,” as a priority of the Global South.

Further, Brazilian President Lula Da Silva asserted that “tariff blackmail is being normalized as a tool for market conquest and interference in domestic affairs” and also asserted that BRICS members should be united to oppose the U.S. empire’s attempts to “divide and conquer.”

And Da Silva wasn’t done. He added that BRICS countries will show how “cooperation prevails over any form of rivalry” in international politics.

News Unboxed showed a video segment titled “Global Balance Shaken” where BRICS is indeed a threat to the current, imperial world order with its parasitical rule of capital.

The Trump regime has already failed in its objectives. Its brutality only makes more and more people pissed off, both foreign and domestic. The regime’s hostility toward BRICS shows how threatened and scared it is with the current U.S.-dominated world order being challenged by what can be described as an organization promoting, and wanting to implement, a viable alternative.

Real change is needed world-wide, and BRICS could be the answer.
