Orwellian Derangement Syndrome
By David Starr
The title of this article does need an explanation. In George Orwell’s novel, “1984,” there is a society whose leaders and supporters use doublespeak to “inform” the public. Meaning, one thing is said but is totally contradicted verbally into the opposite of what was initially said.
This is characteristic of the right-wing in general (and with neoliberals as well). Donald Trump and his regime have been practicing doublespeak for years. Trump himself is infamous for doing this.
Thus, Trump and the right-wing have Orwellian Derangement Syndrome (ODS). They say the complete opposite of what they have said initially. And also do the complete opposite of what they initially say.
Along with doublespeak, Trump is grossly obsessed with boasting about his “accomplishments.” But there none, really. The examples abound from his deranged mind. And here are some:
• Trump thought and said he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize. He bragged that he stopped various wars worldwide. But the opposite is true. Trump has started or fueled wars and interventions in the Middle East, Latin America, and other parts of the world.
• Trump claimed that the U.S. economy is the best its ever been under his “leadership.” He called it a “golden age.” Rising prices in several products and services while many U.S. citizens struggle financially is actually the reality under Trump. The U.S. debt is about 21 trillion dollars which he heavily contributed to.
• The tariffs Trump has imposed on other countries has caused significant damage. U.S. farmers have been under financial stress, some already losing their farms. Foreign companies like in China importing products to the U.S. are not going to be susceptible to the tariffs and thus would charge more for their products. Further, China imposed tariffs on the U.S. in retaliation. This has been catastrophic for U.S. consumers. Yet, Trump’s tariffs are part of his making “America great again” scheme.
• Immigrants have felt the psychotic brunt of Trump’s barbaric polices where he has claimed that Mexicans are “rapists” and Haitians have “eaten” cats and dogs in the neighbors they reside in. What it amounts to is the portrayal as immigrants as “animals.” Yet Trump’s ICE Gestapo has violated the basic rights of citizens and noncitizens alike. In particular, arresting people who don’t like look “true Americans.” Trump is actually the animal in imposing his policies with ICE members being murderers and rapists. Sometimes those who claim to be the most civilized are the most savage.
• Trump has called himself the “peace” president and “formed” the morally bankrupt “Board of Peace.” But that’s contradicted by his immoral outlook, probably with desires to conquer the world and make it into the image of the U.S. empire. He’s insulted Africans by saying that they live in “shithole countries.” Trump really is a racist, looking down at people of color, except for his tokens who are O.K. as long as they stay in their place.
So, Trump really has a severe case of ODS, like other right-wingers. He and they have not only been arrogant and insulting, they have displayed an unmatched stupidity. Yet, Trump has called himself a “stable genius” and his associates have bowed to “king Trump.”
Given their ODS, the Trump regime is anything but stable.
